Nice clean lines. No gaps, no warped boards, no worries. Much better. I got one HELL of a sunburn fixing this though. :(

Note, the paint on the window trim was already there.

Tada! The left vertical trim board sits a little higher and the right one a little lower than the replaced trim piece (hence the shadow). Everything got repainted, recaulked, and this time the trim board was put in with 1.75" exterior screws covered with latex caulking to hide the heads. No leaks now.

Note, the paint on the window trim was already there.

No before pic, sorry. The paint had flaked and peeled away in spots around the door. Apparently the trim used for the jambs had really crappy primer or it was poorly applied. After 3.5 hours scraping, scrubbing, and even using masking tape to pull any and all loose paint off, this is the net result.

Also fixed was the horrendously cruddy caulking job done along the borders of the jamb. The Home Depot installer put no caulk along the vertical edges of the door and really glopped the caulk up bad along the top. Ripped all of that out and did it right.

That caulking is about 13 years old. It shouldn't be cracking like that. The board is definitely warping. The builders didn't nail the trim very far into the underlying stud. Duh.

A close-up shot of the wonderful craftsmanship. I didn't even notice this thing pulling away until I was mowing the lawn one day. Also note the many different shades of paint used on the board (also not previously noticed).

Hey, guess what else is missing behind that trim? Insulation! Yep, no insulation around the window unit itself and the outer trim. Nice, guys. Filled the void with spray foam and trimmed the excess before replacing the trim.

I pulled the old trim off by hand with relatively little effort. BAD.

Our lovely builder's grade kitchen window. The previous owner didn't keep up with the caulking, and the board was put in with nails that were too short by the builder. Net result? The large water-catching gap (lower right) funneling rain under the window into the house. BAD.
